So the 3rd floor Sapphire Room of the Fairmont Pacific Rim is abuzz, as Vancouver’s cocktail fans come to register and meet the faces of Tales of the Cocktail. Besides some excited rummaging through the swag bags – the bottles of Twisted and Bitter orange bitters causing no small amount of squealing – there are drinks on hand to ease old and new TOTC-ers into the swing of things. New Orleans jazz brings some much-needed southern sun to the grey skies of Vancouver, as do the first cocktails of the day:
Grand Marnier are mixing up a Grand Smash (Grand Marnier, lemon and mint), while Don Julio offer a trio of treats: Mint Coat and No Manners (Green Chartreuse, Don Julia Blanco and cayenne), the Agave Drop (Don Julio Blanco, Agave Nectar and lime) and the Snap, Crackle and Drop (Don Julio Reposado, Angostura bitters, black pepper and lime).
There’s also a Kold Draft stand, where the reps are introducing Canada to their large, slow-melting ice cubes, something that their American colleagues are already well aware of.
Not that Canadians needed any extra motivation to be friendlier, but the legendary New Orleans charm is already starting to work its magic.
