Think Like a Monk

Times-Picayune journalist Judy Walker this morning published an article about the “Religious Spirits” panel, featuring Allen Katz and Garrett Oliver, discussing the medieval roots of distillation by brothers in monastic orders. She talks to Katz about the sacred roots of Benedictine, Chartreuse, and other monastic spirits. This sounds like a great panel, and I believe tickets are still available. I’ve heard Garrett Oliver speak about the history of beer and brewing a couple of times, and when you consider the monastic roots of much of brewing, it makes perfect sense that he’d have an interest in monastic spirits as well. He’s a great speaker, with wonderful stories and a sparkling, dry wit. If you’ve never heard him, you’re in for a treat. I’m disappointed this conflicts with my choice, Dale DeGroff’s  cognac panel.
