Stevi Deter (Two at the Most) is a cocktail ingenue living in Redmond, WA.
Perusing the list of this year’s seminars at Tales of the Cocktail, my eye was immediately drawn to 21st Century Gin. While gin is my favorite base spirit, it’s hard not to be confused by the sudden influx of new brands.
This seminar, to be run in a classic panel style, will look at the current trends. Charlotte Voisey will be our moderator in this exploration of modern trends in gin. She will start the discussion by introducing the gin category and summarizing its colorful history. She will lead us to today’s state of affairs. There is a wealth of new gins on the market, and many of them are making a big impact.
She will then open the floor to our three panelists. They will be looking to answer the basic question:
With all the new gins on the market, is there a need for a new sub category within gin that reflects this recent innovation and decidedly different style of gin that we are seeing nowadays?
Our panelists will be Jim Ryan, Hendrick’s Gin Brand Ambassador; Ryan Magarian, Founder Aviation Gin and Liquid Relations; and Angus Winchester, Tanqueray Ten Global Brand Ambassador.
To complement the discussion, there will be three cocktails, one for each gin mentioned above. More importantly, each will represent a new style of cocktail, reflecting how gin has evolved. The goal is to demonstrate how we can create new gin cocktails, instead of just recreating the classics.
