Lucius — Yes, but not since Katrina. That said, a friend whose palate I trust implicitly went very recently and had fabulous food, including the fried chicken, which she loved.

Johnny’s Poboys has been my lunch spot in da quarter for years. When I took my uncle there last year, the lunch special on a Thursday was 1/2 fried softshell crab poboy with a bowl of gumbo for $10.95. Can’t beat that with a stick.

How about Sukho Thai in the Marigny or Adolfo’s on Frenchmen?

I will just point out that I wouldn’t exactly characterize Gene’s as a “hole in the wall.” They do own all their own walls, and given their startling color and the size of the building you can’t exactly miss ‘em. ;)
